home progress: bathroom update & tile patterns

Well hello almost pretty bathroom! As you can see we’ve made a bit more progress in our new loo (sometimes painfully slow progress, but I’ll take it). We had the leftover marble from the kitchen cut to size and installed on the shower ledge and as the vanity top. The sinks are in as well as the faucets and shower head, and we are getting oh so close to a working bathroom. The only things stopping us are the missing toilet, the plumbing under the sink needs to be finished, and the glass shower enclosure, mirror, and lighting still have to be installed.

Let me just say again that I love subway tile. It’s simple, clean, white, readily available, and affordable (win, win, win, win).

The traditional running bond pattern, like we used in the cabin, will always be a great choice but I wanted to do something a little different here, so I started playing around with the 3×6 shape in adobe illustrator and that’s when I came up with these alternate patterns, all which can be made with the common . I chose to go with the herringbone pattern, which is a classic pattern for wood floors (and a million other things), but I hadn’t really seen it translated to subway tile (until I googled it that is, and found a bazillion examples…sigh ;) (it’s ok I still love it)). The “linear vertical” would work great in a really modern space and I am already thinking I may want to try the “perpendicular” or “windmill” version when we re-do our other bathroom (Lord help us!).

from the weekend: los angeles staycation

We had friends visiting this weekend so we took a time-out to hang and enjoy another side of the city. We stayed a night at the , chatted over snacks and drinks on the rooftop while taking in the view (right photo), had a seriously good dinner at , and then struck out twice at finding a karaoke place that wasn’t booked up for the evening (wah wahhh, we really had the hankering to sing). The next morning we had breakfast on the Mezzanine before heading over to Silver Lake for a little shopping and then coveting of all the furnishings when we made a pit stop at  (left photo). Seriously, the place is gorgeous.

Hope you had a fun filled weekend. x

home progress: dresser found!

vintage dresser, bedroom update // smitten studiovintage dresser, bedroom update // smitten studiovintage dresser, bedroom update // smitten studiovintage dresser, bedroom update // smitten studiovintage dresser, bedroom update // smitten studioMy search for the perfect dresser ended with a big heeeeeell yes! Quality dressers are SO expensive and even not so great quality dressers usually cost more than I wanted to spend and when I find myself in that predicament (which I much too often do) I turned my search to vintage.

I started googling like a crazy person until I found this listing on craigslist and I swear I heard angels sing (well maybe not but I’m sure they were on the verge). We called the craigslister and it turned out that it was from a local vintage shop . Of course it wasn’t dirt cheap (we got it for $500) but still a lot less expensive then some of the new dressers I was looking at, and I like it EVEN better, so win win! The measurements were perfect, I LOVE the brass detailing and the little wicker inset on the top, and it is in beautiful shape, oh and can we talk about that woodgrain? (hello grogeous walnut!)

So that is all, an entire post dedicated to my new favorite tallboy (move over Rupe). As far as the rest of the bedroom… it is still empty! But hopefully we get to move in soon.

from the weekend: antelope valley

This weekend we worked around the house again (surprise surprise), alternating trips from Home Depot and Ikea while we were building some media storage, started painting the exterior (yay), and installed some closet doors. I really am looking forward to welcoming back our social life once the renovations are finished (friends, I miss you! ;)). We did however take a break on Sunday to celebrate Easter, and then headed to Antelope Valley to see in bloom while still in our Easter best. Spring in California is pretty awesome.

Hope you had a happy Easter. x
